Bringing Creativity to Life
Art is not always pretty.
Art is not always pretty. Art is honest and objective. Art can be found everyday in the smallest details. It is a scrambling roach as much as a fluttering butterfly. It is the graffiti on an underpass as much as the painting on the wall. It is a rain-cloud filled sky as much as a cloudless, blue sky. Strip away all of the preconceptions that you have acquired and view the world through the eyes of a child.
There is little character in perfection.
A child understands inherently the joys of coloring outside the lines. Children live without judgement or limitations. Only as we grow older does our inner child begin to be bombarded with messages that corrupt our objectivity: “Don’t do that.” “That’s the wrong color.” “Stay inside the lines.” The need to conform overtakes the desire to create. Pablo Picasso lamented the loss of his inner child and actively sought to tap into it and regain the innocence and honesty of aesthetics uncontaminated by ego. We should not be afraid to try, or fail. We should not allow our expression to be dictated to by the parameters of others. We should not be obsessed with perfection. There is little character in perfection.
The Oregon coast offers a unique and surreal landscape. Dark, craggy volcanic rock formations dot the shoreline and thrust out from the ocean just beyond the breaking waves. The images here were created by compiling multiple single frames taken from one vantage point, creating a representation of the landscape as never before seen.

This is a brochure design for a financial advisor. I find working with left-brained professionals to be an excellent challenge that always results in interesting projects. Part of the process is to educate them on the creative process and then challenge their pre-determined aesthetic and functional vision.
The NYSE bull was illustrated for the cover as an allusion to the clients ability to bring Wall Street expertise to Main Street. The type design allowed for emphasis on the qualities and characteristics he wished to highlight as well as providing visual uniqueness in an industry often considered staid and conventional. And the infographic served to define and describe his unique process in working with clients. As my client said to me regarding this project: “This is a piece of art.”
